Does Rao’s Homemade use extra virgin olive oil?

Rao’s uses 100% pure olive oil, not extra virgin olive oil — and here’s why that’s actually better for slow-cooked sauce. Pure olive oil has a higher smoke point and better heat tolerance, so it won’t degrade or turn bitter during long simmers. It also has a milder flavor that keeps the sauce balanced rather than heavily olive-forward. This has always been part of the Rao’s recipe and remains unchanged today.

Have the recipes, ingredients, or production methods changed?

No. The recipes remain true to their original standards, using the same ingredients, sourcing practices, and production methods as always. Ingredients such as tomatoes, olive oil, herbs, and seasonings remain unchanged, with tomatoes continuing to be sourced from Italy. The traditional slow-simmered, open-kettle cooking process also remains exactly the same.

Instructions / Storage

Cooking Instructions Use 6 quarts of water for every 1 pound of pasta. Heat the water over high heat until it reaches a rolling boil. Add a generous pinch of salt to enhance flavor. Carefully add the pasta to the boiling water. Stir occasionally to prevent the pasta from sticking. For al dente pasta, cook for 11 minutes. For a more tender texture, cook for 12 minutes. Once cooked, drain the pasta thoroughly. Toss immediately with your favorite Rao’s Homemade® Sauce and enjoy!
